Dallas Sidekicks Return in 2012

ALLEN - The slogan of the Dallas Sidekicks in 2012 is “we’re back.” And after an eight-year hiatus from professional indoor soccer, the team is just that — back.

The Dallas Sidekicks organization is starting up again this fall, playing in the PASL. Eight home games are scheduled at Allen Event Center, complete with all the championship banners on hand from the team’s past. The full schedule will be announced in early September. The home opener is Nov. 3.

“It will be really great to have the Sidekicks playing here once again,” said Gordon Jago, former Sidekicks head coach, who will be calling the TV broadcasts in 2012 alongside Norm Hitzges. “So many former Sidekick fans have asked me over the years, ‘When will the Sidekicks be back?’ Now I can tell them, ‘November third.’”

The Sidekicks have a storied indoor soccer tradition, winning four indoor championships in various leagues, and building a fan base in the DFW area along the way that grew up watching Sidekicks games at Reunion Arena in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

“Growing up in DFW, my brother and I were huge fans when the team first got going,” said Ty Walker, radio host on 1310 the Ticket and the 2012 public-address voice for the Sidekicks. “In fact, we were at the Sidekicks' first home game in 1984 and [were] hooked immediately. [I’m] really glad that a new generation of kids will get a chance to enjoy the team like I did."

This Sidekicks season will focus on reconnecting with the North Texas soccer community and sports fans. Youth soccer teams are able to reserve spots now to play in pregame “make it, take it” tournaments and halftime games on the Sidekicks field at Allen Event Center.

The season will also focus on honoring Tatu, the unquestioned leader of the championship Sidekicks teams, who is back with the organization in 2012 as head coach and general manager.

A banner presentation for Tatu’s No. 9 retirement ceremony will take place at a home game to be determined. Tickets priced as low as $9 will be offered, and fans will get to relive a piece of former Sidekicks goal-scoring celebrations. After each Sidekicks goal in 2012, the team will throw an autographed Tatu jersey into the stands, in honor of Tatu’s famous goal celebrations.

New majority owner Ronnie Davis will serve as president and CEO, while Tatu, former GM Jim Tolbert and former owner Sonny Williams will make up the rest of the ownership group.

The roster will be made up of players from three sessions of local tryouts the organization held this summer, indoor players from various leagues and a few former Sidekicks to be named. One already on board is former all-star goalie Sagu, who rejoins the team after eight seasons with the Baltimore Blast of the MSL. Sagu began his career with the Sidekicks and was named WISL Goalkeeper of the Year while with the Sidekicks in 2001 and 2002.

Individual and season tickets are on sale now, available through Ticketmaster or the team’s website. For more information, visit the team at http://www.dallassidekicks.net or call 214-550-6130. Follow the team on Twitter @GoSidekicks or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/gosidekicks.
