Sidekicks excited with former MISL teams joining PASL
While the Dallas Sidekicks are hard at work this offseason gearing up for the franchise’s 30-year anniversary season, the Professional Arena Soccer League, the Sidekicks’ home since the organization’s rebirth in 2012, is going through some major changes of its own.
Last month, several teams parted ways with the Major Indoor Soccer League and announced the creation of a new partnership with the PASL to unify professional indoor soccer across the country. The 2014-15 PASL is projected to have around 20 teams in the U.S. and Mexico, and will now be considered the most elite level of indoor soccer in North America. A few new faces in the league will include the Baltimore Blast, Missouri Comets and Milwaukee Wave, among others.
“This is the best possible result I could have imagined, and it’s a great win for the PASL and indoor soccer,” Dallas Sidekicks owner Ronnie Davis said. “The quality of competition is going to increase, and I think our fans are going to love exploring some old rivalries and fueling new ones.”
Heading into its seventh season, the PASL has grown from eight teams in 2008-09, while attendance has increased 105 percent since 2011-12. The league projects that average attendance will jump another 50 percent or more in the upcoming season with the addition of the new teams.
The Sidekicks make their home at the Allen Event Center, just 30 minutes outside of Dallas. The 6,000-seat arena is one of the premier venues in the PASL, and Davis hopes that the bolstered league and first-rate competition will play a major role in keeping the Dallas Sidekicks a fixture in DFW for 30 more years and beyond.
“This merger has the potential to really begin the surge to put indoor soccer on the map again on a national level, as well as here at home in DFW,” Davis said. “I’m excited for the future of the league and the Dallas Sidekicks, and hope that our fans will come out in full force this season to celebrate 30 years with us.”
League and team owners will meet later this month in Baltimore and hold a formal press conference on Monday, May 19th. The majority of the teams, division layout and any other changes will be announced at that time.
