Dallas Sidekicks Finish Record-Breaking 2014 Season

The Dallas Sidekicks’ second season back in action again saw tremendous success and a year of record-breaking individual and team performances. Despite an early exit from the playoffs, the team has countless positives to take away from the 2013-14 campaign.

The Sidekicks’ season opener just happened to fall on the 29th anniversary of the franchise’s original debut. The 15-3 win over the Wichita B-52s was a promising start to what would be an extremely successful regular season that saw the Sidekicks finish second in the Central Division with a record of 14-2. The team also continued its opening-night winning streak that dates back to 1993.

A match early in the season against the Tulsa Revolution shattered PASL-era records, including the fastest time between two goals (16 seconds) and total shots on goal (43). More recently, on Jan. 11 versus the Texas Strikers, the Sidekicks set new records for shots in a quarter (26) and goals in a quarter (9) and tied the all-time Sidekicks record for goals in a half (11).

One of this season’s breakout players was goalkeeper Dejan “Milo” Milosevic, who had a chance to shine with veteran goaltender Sagu out of the lineup with a hip flexor injury. Milo served as the Sidekicks’ last defensive weapon for nine straight games, earning a winning record of 8-1. His most memorable moment came on Jan. 4, where he earned just the seventh shutout in the history of the PASL on the road against the Wichita B-52s. Carrying on the overall shutout to the fourth quarter of the next match, Milo and the Sidekicks defensemen kept their opponents off the board for 95 minutes, 31 seconds. This shattered the PASL-era Sidekicks record of 48:17 set last season across two games against the Texas Strikers.

When Sagu returned to the field after missing nine games, he made an immediate impact in what was one of the biggest victories of the season. The veteran made 18 saves and held the top-scoring Las Vegas Legends to just six goals. His performance earned him the title of PASL Player of the Week on Feb. 3.

Sidekicks newcomer Nestor Hernandez made an immediate impact on the team’s offense this season. The Chicago native finished out the regular season eighth in the PASL with 49 points (33 goals and 16 assists). The midfielder made Sidekicks history by scoring five consecutive hat tricks, beating a record long held by current Sidekicks head coach Tatu and former defenseman David Doyle. He also topped the team in shorthanded goals with five, which set an all-time Sidekicks record for most shorthanded goals in a season (the previous record was two held by five different players). Hernandez’s efforts earned him PASL Honorable Mention honors.

The epitome of consistency, midfielder and fan favorite Jamie Lovegrove earned a point in every regular season match he played in this season. His 48 points (26 goals and 22 assists) made him the league’s 10th-highest scorer and earned and a spot on the PASL’s All-League Second Team. This was Lovegrove’s second-straight successful season; he is already the 18th-best goal scorer in franchise history.

An integral part of the Sidekicks’ achievements this season was the continued support the team received from its fans. Whether the cheers in the stands at the Allen Event Center came from supporters old or new, the rambunctious environment spurred on the home team and pestered the visitors. The Sidekicks attendance this season averaged over 4,000 fans a game.

With the offseason comes a few months of recovery and relaxation for the Sidekicks. The franchise will continue its tradition of holding summer youth camps and appearing at events and causes across DFW, but with fall will come a refocusing. A third-straight trip to the playoffs and bringing the Ron Newman Cup to Dallas will be the team’s goal. With their mix of skilled veterans and an influx of young talent, the Sidekicks will carry on building during the offseason to continue as a force to be reckoned with in the PASL.
