Dallas Sidekicks Partner with
Doc Lawson, DonamiSport
to Aid Liberian Relief Effort

The Dallas Sidekicks recently announced the beginning of a partnership with former defender and Olympian Doc Lawson, to aid his work with the children of Liberia through DonamiSport and Liberia YMCA.

This year, DonamiSport and the Liberia YMCA are launching the final phase of their efforts to empower youth and transform communities in the West African nation, after 15 years of brutal and destructive civil war. The goal is to raise $30,000 through a variety of efforts by the end of January.

"I am committed to bringing recreational soccer and clean drinking water to the entire nation of Liberia by the end of the decade — from border to border, east to west, north to south," Lawson says. "We also aim to share the YMCA's Christian values."

The Sidekicks presented a $5,000 donation to the cause during their game on Jan. 2 against the Brownsville Barracudas. An additional $5,000 will be presented on Jan. 30, when the Sidekicks face Soles de Sonora.

DonamiSport and the Dallas Sidekicks will work together throughout January to raise awareness of the effort in Libera, as well as give the Sidekicks and the public several opportunities to support the cause.

"All of us at the Dallas Sidekicks are humbled to have the opportunity to partner with such an outstanding member of our alumni base. Doc is a true legend in our sport, and has dedicated his post-soccer life to something truly special in a country that desperately needs the aid," says Bob Heckel, Chief Operating Officer of the Dallas Sidekicks.

From 1978 to 1992, Doc Lawson was a mainstay in professional indoor and outdoor soccer in America. He was a Dallas Sidekick from 1985 to 1991, and played an integral role in the team's 1986-87 MISL championship.

Born in Liberia before emigrating to the United States at 10 years old, it was on a return trip to the country where Lawson realized his desire to devote his life to humanitarianism. He began hosting youth soccer camps in partnership with Liberia YMCA, and went on to establish DonamiSport to organize and grow the effort to impact youth by delivering affordable access to organized sport and other needs. The organization is committed to bringing recreational soccer and clean drinking water to every child in Liberia by December 2020.
