North Texas Referees Make An Impact at USASA National Co-Ed Cup
North Texas Soccer hosted the USASA National Co-Ed Cup, Oct. 21-23, at Russell Creek in Plano. On Thursday night, Oct. 20, there was a referee meeting, followed by a dinner at Buca di Beppo for the referees. About 40 referees attended the dinner.
Games started Friday evening in three time slots, then continued Saturday starting at 8 a.m. and continuing on a two-hour rolling schedule, with the final kickoff of the day at 6 p.m. The consolation games, the semi-final games, and the finals were to be played Sunday morning at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
Much-needed rain, however, saturated the fields late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, delaying the start of games on Sunday. At 11 a.m., it was still too wet to play, so semi-finals became "Kicks from the Mark" to decide who went forward to the finals.
The Second Division finalists were both from North Texas and took the option to play later in the week, because there was a good chance the four fields would not be dry enough to play the finals on Sunday. At about 1:30 p.m., the City of Plano found two fields that were dry enough to play on.
The First Division and Over-30 Division played their finals at 2 p.m., while the Third Division played at 3:30 p.m. These games were shortened to 30-minute halves on the City of Plano's wishes, to ensure that both games were completed.
All in all, the USASA National Co-Ed Cup went well. This is a direct result of the long and tireless work put in by the USASA National Cup Committee, North Texas Soccer Tournament Committee, North Texas Soccer administrative staff, volunteers and — of course — the referees that donated their time and refereed without compensation.
I would like to thank the following North Texas Soccer referees for their support in this tournament: Jim Alexander, Frank Barboza, Paul Blackwell, James Bogdanoff, Kyle Borne, Juan Bryce-Cotes, Jim Carlsen, Ian Chapman, Woon Chung, Chuy Coronado, John DeArmond, Don Dillard, Mike Goff, Joe Harlett, Tom Harlett, Bret Harp, Jeff Hatfield, Lorenzo Herrera, Ann Hicks, Becky Hornisher, Joe Hornisher, Scott Hughes, Ali, Hussein, Christian Ilonzeh, Rob Kucenski, David Learmonth, David, Leiva, Santiago Lorenzo, Melvin Machayo, Rich Mayes, Joel McKell, James Meade, Frank Medrano, Monica Mills, Chad Moon, Mickey O'Brien, John O'Kane, Jim Parker, Jonas Perez, Mario Perez, Charles Platt Jr., Chris Platt, Pete Reynolds, Ricky Rodriguez, Marty Stringer, Bill Tomlinson, Kent Voyles, Pat Wilder, Carmichael Williams, Scott Woodard, Brent Zirkle and Jesse Zuniga.
