Sidekicks prepping for Oct. 25 season-opener

The Dallas Sidekicks are hard at work preparing for the kickoff of the 204-15 season on Oct. 25. In September, head coach Tatu and Director of Soccer Operations Nick Stavrou welcomed 30 players into training camp who are competing for 20 roster spots.

“We have a lot players returning from last year, but we’re also taking a close look at some new young guys who we’re pretty excited about,” Stavrou said. “We want to improve on the success we have had the last two years and want to put together the best team possible. With only 20 spots, it’s going to be very competitive.”

The roster for the upcoming season will include many familiar names to Sidekick fans, but through recruitment and open tryouts, the coaching staff has brought in several new faces to give the team a spark. One of those new names is Freddy Moojen, a Brazilian forward who has played professionally on both indoor and outdoor teams around the world. Moojen joins the Sidekicks from the Baltimore Blast, where last season he accumulated 11 points in seven matches.

Moojen’s personal connection to Dallas comes via previous teammates and now fellow Sidekicks Shaun David and Ricardinho. David and Moojen competed together in the MISL with the New Jersey Ironmen in 2008, and the pair were joined by Ricardhino on the Omaha Vipers in 2010. He also has a familiar face in Sidekicks goalkeeper Sagu, whom Moojen has competed against for several years.

“I kept in touch with the players I knew in Dallas and they have told me good things about playing here,” Moojen said. “I followed the team since they came back two years ago and always thought they looked very organized and together, and I had a really good feeling when I started talking to (Dallas Sidekicks owner) Ronnie (Davis). I’m really excited for a new beginning in Dallas with a good team and great players.”

The Sidekicks and their final training camp prospects will be put to the test on Oct. 17, when they host the Tulsa Revolution at 2 p.m. at Soccer Spectrum, their practice facility. Admission to the match will be $5 at the door. Soccer Spectrum is located at 1251 Digital Drive, Richardson, TX, 75085.

The Sidekicks open their season at home on Sat., Oct. 25 at the Allen Event Center in the inaugural match of the Major Arena Soccer League. Dallas will face the 2013 MISL champion Missouri Comets in a match that is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. Individual and season tickets for the 2014-15 season are now on sale via Ticketmaster or by calling 469-200-GOAL.
