North Texas Refs Go Back To School This Summer

Mansfield Soccer Referees, in conjunction with Mansfield Revolution Soccer Club and Mansfield Soccer Association, held their second annual Soccer Summer School. As a part of the training activities, Mansfield referees were given the opportunity attend short classroom sessions and participate in on-field training.

This year, Kyle Borne, Fred Hiler and Larry Huey assisted the MSA Referee Mentor Committee with the classroom sessions and the field training. Classroom topics included: The Diagonal System of Control and Why to Use It Even in U7 and U8 Games; Foul Recognition; Assistant Referee Positioning and Mechanics; information on the new referee grade system and a discussion of recertification options.

All referees in attendance were able to work as both centers and assistant referees during scrimmage games. This provided the referees the chance to experience game conditions without pressure. All field sessions were recapped with the mentors and a wrap-up discussion was also offered.

The teams also benefitted by having referees working their scrimmages and being able to tune their games, especially from an offside perspective.
