Star-Studded Line Up on Tap for
Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXIII
Executive Director Gordon Jago and Tournament Manager Randy Jones announced this month that the following teams have been officially confirmed to compete in the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXIII Super Group, to be played in Dallas, April 1-8:
- Club Bolivar (Bolivia)
- Coritiba FC (Brazil)
- Dallas Texans (USA)
- Everton FC (England)
- Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany)
- Esporte Clube Bahia (Brazil)
- F.C. Dallas (USA)
- Kashiwa Reysol (Japan)
- Manchester United (England)
- Paris St. Germain (France)
- Tigres (Mexico)
- Seleccion Nacional de Mexico Sub 20 (Mexico)
"To have such an excellent group of teams, with many outstanding young players, will provide the Dallas soccer fans the opportunity to see the very best of International youth soccer and the contrasting styles of South American, European, Asian and North American teams during the week-long tournament," Jones said.
The Super Group tournament will play under a new format this year, with the 16-team group of recent years being reduced to 12 teams.
This decision, by the Dallas Cup Competition Committee, is in order to create a "wild card" opportunity. With three brackets of four teams, the three bracket winners will advance to the semi finals, plus one "wild card" — that being the team with the next-best record (according to the Rules of the Competition) of all three brackets — to fill the fourth semi-finalist spot.
Too often in the past, many of the Wednesday qualifying games have had no meaning for players and supporters. Following the Sunday and Monday results, too many teams cannot qualify no matter the result of their last preliminary game. The wild-card opportunity increases the likelihood of those final preliminary game results having a significant bearing on which teams advance to the semi-finals.
